I did a painting of Joker a couple years ago, right after I heard about the passing of Heath Ledger, but before the release of the Dark Knight. I always thought I should have made prints and sold them. I never did. a few months later I did a companion piece of Batman. The Joker is dressed to the nines, and sports a beyond the grave gaze, as he stands there proudly displaying himself. He always was a bit of a nutter, but I like thinking of him as a comedian. Knowing that everything he does, he does for Batman's benefit. The painting is crackled, almost as though it's subtly shattered. It worked out pretty well. The masks in the background are laid out in an orderly fashion, and represent Harley Quinn. I wanted them to look a little more similar; maybe i'll go back into it one day and make some changes.
Batman is a bit older in this depiction. He holds his cape around him for the protection and warmth that the shadows might afford him. There's also the fear of his chaotic side, the bats which surround him.
I have been considering doing a few more pieces in this series. There are all sorts of characters who could make the cut but the ones I've been considering are: Two-Face, Riddler, Harley Quinn, and Catwoman. Depending on the scope of the project I might also include Bane, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and the Penguin. Extreme alternates are Robin, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Batwoman, Clayface, etc etc etc. I could always just do sketches of all of them and see which ones work. Just something I'm pondering over.
